Langtry Farms strategy for sustainable farming is based on the utilization of the most advanced technologies. We have partnered with Tule Technologies to maximize sustainable farming practices for our vineyard irrigation protocols. The investment we have made in technology allows our farming team to see in real time the evapotranspiration (“ET”) within our vineyards. ET is the process of evaporation from the plant and soil surfaces and from within plant tissues (i.e., water movement through stomata). Our technology reports the amount of water used by the plants, the amount of irrigation we have applied, a forecast of atmospheric demand, and provides our farming team with irrigation recommendations based on our vine stress and yield objectives for each vineyard.
In addition to leveraging the most advanced technologies in its farming practices Langtry farms also utilizes traditional methods of soil fertility management. Vine growth removes nutrients from the soil depleting the soil until it becomes unproductive. Sustainable farming focuses on replenishing the soil while minimizing the use of non-renewable resources. At Langtry Farms we utilize a diversity of nitrogen fixing plants that grow during the winter and that are incorporated into the soil in the spring. These plants include bell beans, common vetch, dundale peas, and barley. Cover crops improve natural fertility and the overall health of the soils. As an extra measure, Langtry Farms composts the pomace from the wine making process to reincorporate some of the nutrients that were removed from the soil.
